The song was written by Minaj herself, while production was handled by Boi-1da. The musical composition off the song comprises musical genres of ambient and alternative hip hop music. The song deals with about her life and her being in the spotlight and fame. The song references male rappers she knows, along with her comparing herself to other singers. This is Minaj's first song to be released by Republic Records. "Freedom" received acclaim from most music critics. Perez Hilton wrote on his website that the song was "Pretty" and felt it was a "sequel to "Moment 4 Life." The Honest Hour was also positive, writing "I think I really like this song! Nicki has delivered a solid effort prior to her album re-release." They also praised her rapping and positiveness towards the emotion behind the song. Charley Rogulewski from Vibe was also very positive towards the song, by saying that with evidence to her rapping, he felt that she could also sing. Exclaim stated the song delivered an atop poppy, crystal clear synths. Sam Gould from SoulCulture said that "might not mark an end to the bubblegum nonsense pop" but he praised the song for being "the best thing I've heard from her in a long while."
